This cemetery was created by Dr. Lewis M. Green – a successful and wealthy local entrepreneur and landowner.

Dr Green started a “patent medicine” business based upon herbal and organic formulations.   Medicine bottles labeled “L. M. Green” are now prized antiques.   His oldest son, George Gill “G.G.” Green (a U.S. Army Colonel who served – with distinction - in the American Civil War) inherited this business from his father; growing it to become the first acknowledged millionaire in the City of Woodbury.

In 1887, having previously purchased the former Methodist-Episcopal Cemetery; Dr. Green accumulated three additional parcels of local farm land in Deptford Township (Gloucester County).  When merged, the combined 22 acres became “The Green Cemetery”, which he then operated as a sole-proprietorship. Dr. Green envisioned this facility as a “country garden” in the post-Civil War tradition of cemetery design.

When Dr. Green died in 1894, the 2nd codicil of his will provided that the Green Cemetery should continue as an “Operating Trust” - a common business entity which predated New Jersey’s “corporate law”.
